Bac Ninh - Bonghwa: Ties strengthened on a unique “shared lineage” foundation

Updated: 11:29, 24/04/2026

BAC NINH - As part of a working visit to South Korea, on April 23 a delegation from Bac Ninh province carried out a series of activities in Bonghwa county, Gyeongsangbuk-do province.

The Bac Ninh delegation, led by Mai Son, member of the provincial Party Standing Committee and Standing Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee (PPC), held talks with Bonghwa authorities. The delegation was received by Vice Chairman of Bonghwa county Park Si Hong and leaders of relevant departments.

Standing Vice Chairman Mai Son affirms that the relationship between Bac Ninh and Bonghwa is uniquely special, rooted in shared history and lineage ties.

At the meeting, Bonghwa leaders expressed their pleasure at welcoming the Bac Ninh delegation, highlighting a special bond with Vietnam that dates back more than 800 years, rooted in the historical legacy of Ly Long Tuong, who laid the foundation for the Ly clan descendants’ community in Korea.

Today, a Vietnamese community and Ly descendants continue to live in Bonghwa, making active contributions to local socio-economic and cultural life.

This is seen as a key factor underpinning a distinctive and enduring relationship between Bonghwa and Vietnamese localities.

Notably, Bonghwa has built and put into use a statue of King Ly Thai To at the Chunghyodang complex, a cultural and historical site associated with the Ly descendants’ community.

The monument serves not only as a place of remembrance but also as a symbol of Vietnam - Korea cultural exchange. During the visit, the Bac Ninh delegation offered incense at the statue of King Ly Thai To and planted a commemorative tree at the site, in tribute to history and as a gesture to further strengthen bilateral ties.

Also at Chunghyodang, Bonghwa is implementing the Vietnam Village “K-Vietnam Valley” project, aimed at preserving and promoting the historical and cultural values of the Vietnamese community in Korea, while developing the area into a distinctive cultural exchange and tourism destination linking the two countries.

On the Bac Ninh side, Standing Vice Chairman Mai Son expressed appreciation for Bonghwa’s warm reception and briefed the hosts on the province’s socio-economic development following the merger of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang provinces.

With an area of over 4,700 square kilometers and a population exceeding 3.6 million, Bac Ninh is emerging as one of Vietnam’s high-tech industrial hubs, maintaining strong growth and attracting significant foreign investment, particularly in high-tech and semiconductor sectors.

The PPC Vice Chairman stressed that ties between Bac Ninh and Gyeongsangbuk-do province in general, and Bonghwa in particular, go beyond conventional local cooperation, representing a special relationship grounded in shared historical roots and lineage connections linked to the Ly dynasty descendants.

On that basis, both sides agreed to further strengthen cooperation in economic, cultural and educational fields; promote people-to-people exchanges, especially among younger generations; and coordinate efforts to advance the Vietnam Village project in Bonghwa, with the goal of developing it into a cultural and tourism hub connecting Vietnam and South Korea.
