Large-scale timber harvesting boosts forestry value in Bac Ninh

Updated: 07:10, 18/01/2026

BAC NINH - Dry weather conditions are creating favourable conditions for large-scale timber harvesting across Bac Ninh province, while also stimulating one of the busiest periods of the year for wood processing.

Taking advantage of the dry season, thousands of households are harvesting plantation forests to prepare land for the next planting cycle.

Workers at Bao Minh Manufacturing and Trading Co., Ltd. in Tam Tien commune load processed wood products into containers for export to the European market.

The surge in output, combined with investments in deep processing, has helped raise the economic value of plantation forestry and support export growth.

From the start of the dry season, Nguyen Thi Huong’s family in Cai Vang village, Dong Phu commune, has harvested 20 hectares of seven-year-old eucalyptus and part of its more than 20-year-old pine forest, generating profits of over 3 billion VND (131,000 USD). The household manages around 160 hectares of production forest.

Another grower, Tran Dinh Men of Quynh Nau village, Tam Tien commune, harvested 11 hectares of large-timber forest in 2025, mainly eucalyptus aged over 10 years.

Unlike many forest owners who harvest after four to five years, Men follows a large-timber model with longer growing cycles of eight to more than 13 years.

“This model helps reduce initial seedling, fertiliser and care costs, while producing higher-quality timber,” Men said. “Instead of only being chipped for pulp, the wood can be peeled for plywood or sawn, significantly increasing its value.”

Men said profits from large-timber forests were 100 million to more than 200 million VND per hectare higher, depending on tree age. Alongside harvesting, his family is thinning weak trees to improve productivity and preparing seedlings and land for the next planting season.

He has also invested in three wood-peeling machines to process his own timber and purchase wood from other households for processing.

According to the provincial Forest Protection Department under the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Bac Ninh harvested more than 12,180 hectares of concentrated plantation forest in 2025, producing over 1.52 million cubic metres of timber – the highest level on record.

The province ranked second in northern Vietnam and seventh nationwide for timber output.

Average output reached 125 cubic metres per hectare over a five-year cycle. Large-diameter timber accounted for 46% of total output, exceeding the annual plan by 52%. Timber harvested from scattered plantings reached nearly 37,800 cubic metres.

The strong supply has fuelled growth in the province’s wood-processing sector. Bac Ninh currently has 727 forestry processing establishments, including 149 organisations and 578 household-based facilities.

Products range from peeled veneer and wood chips to plywood, formwork panels and household furniture, using plantation timber as the main raw material.

Most facilities are operating efficiently, industry surveys showed. Dinh Manh Huy, owner of a wood-processing workshop in Thong Nhat village, Tay Yen Tu commune, said his facility now purchases more than 40 cubic metres of acacia and eucalyptus daily, nearly double the volume recorded in August 2025.

Beyond basic processing, several companies have invested in modern production lines to manufacture finished wood products for export. Bao Minh Production and Trading Co Ltd in Tam Tien commune has invested 25 billion VND in factory construction and two plywood production lines, operating a closed process from veneer peeling to pressing and packaging.

The company produces about 40 cubic metres of plywood and film-faced plywood per day, all of which is exported to Europe. It employs 50 workers with monthly incomes ranging from 10 million to over 13 million VND.

Veneer sheets are sorted at the wood-processing workshop of Dinh Manh Huy in Thong Nhat hamlet, Tay Yen Tu commune.

The provincial Department of Industry and Trade said market conditions for peeled veneer and processed wood products remain favourable, both domestically and internationally.

In addition to supplying construction and household manufacturing in Vietnam, local firms export to the United States, Japan, South Korea, India and especially Europe, where imports from Russia have declined due to sanctions.

As a result, Bac Ninh’s forestry export value in 2025 reached an estimated 115 million USD, while forestry production value rose 5.3% from a year earlier to more than 2.36 trillion VND, creating jobs and income for thousands of workers.

To support sustainable harvesting and exports, the Forest Protection Department in 2025 piloted a plantation area code system covering more than 4,200 hectares, helping verify timber origin and enhance the credibility of the province’s forestry exports.
