Xuan Luong boosts forest-based economy and livestock production

Updated: 11:33, 20/11/2025

BAC NINH - Xuan Luong commune (Bac Ninh province), with more than 6,000 hectares of planted forest accounting for nearly 70% of its land area, is accelerating a shift toward a sustainable agroforestry model that has improved rural incomes and reshaped the local economy in recent years.

Goat farming surges on strong demand

Goat farming has emerged as one of the fastest-growing sectors. In Na Lu hamlet, farmer Duong Van Kien raises nearly 200 goats in elevated barns. He said the commune’s hilly terrain and abundant natural vegetation help keep input costs low, while demand has risen steadily.

“We cannot meet orders during this season. Buyers from Hai Phong come here frequently,” he said.

Kien began large-scale farming in 2020 and keeps 200–300 goats at a time. His family recently sold 600 goats, each averaging 45 kg, earning more than one billion VND (over 43,500 USD).

Goat numbers in the commune have doubled since 2020 to nearly 6,000. Several households have shifted from small-scale grazing to semi-industrial production with imported breeds that offer faster weight gain and consistent meat quality. Villages such as Nghe, Dong Gian, Dong Gia, Lang Duoi and Na Lu have developed clusters of 50–200 goats per farm.

Xuan Luong also maintains more than 2,100 buffaloes, cows and horses, and 810,000 poultry, forming a diversified livestock structure that authorities say will support long-term income stability.

Local officials aim to develop a branded product, “Xuan Luong Goat,” by improving breeding practices, veterinary management and hygiene standards. A development plan targets 13,000–15,000 goats by 2030, backed by supply–consumption linkages.

Forestry remains the economic pillar

Forestry is the commune’s largest economic driver. With eucalyptus and acacia accounting for most of its planted forest, Xuan Luong harvests 60,000–70,000 cubic metres of timber annually, generating nearly 90 billion VND.

Farmers used to plant old varieties with long harvesting cycles. The adoption of tissue-cultured seedlings and improved techniques has shortened the cycle to 4.5–5 years and increased yields by 20–25%.

Nguyen Ba Tu of Dong Cao hamlet manages 5 hectares of planted forest. He harvests one hectare a year and earns about 200 million VND. He said newer varieties and better fertilizing practices have sharply improved productivity over the past decade.

The commune has also developed a wood-processing industry with nearly 50 companies and workshops. Anh Tuyen Forestry Processing Co., Ltd., based in Dinh hamlet, is among the largest. Director Nong Van Tuyen said his family expanded from a veneer workshop to a full enterprise in 2024 to meet growing demand.

The company specializes in film-coated formwork boards for construction projects nationwide. “Demand is high, and we sell everything we produce,” he said. The company employs 40 permanent workers and around 70 seasonal laborers, producing 60,000 boards a month worth about VND 16 billion.

Authorities plan to build a closed-loop forestry model, encouraging the use of high-quality seedlings and expanding processing capacity to keep value-added activities inside the commune.

According to commune chairman Le Hong Viet, Xuan Luong’s priority is to maximize its two core strengths, forestry and livestock, while ensuring environmental sustainability. Average per capita income has reached around 50 million VND a year, and households are investing in new housing and improved living standards.

He said the commune will continue zoning goat-farming areas, supporting medium- and large-scale farms, and maintaining stable herds of cattle and poultry. In forestry, the focus is on high-quality seedlings, sustainable harvesting and stronger links between growers and processors.
