Bac Giang accounts for more than 50 percent of the total national lychee output. China’s policies on Covid-19 prevention and control may affect exporting lychee to this market. Lychee will be harvested in next 3 weeks. Hence, MARD held this meeting with a focus on livestock recovery and preparing for upcoming lychee crop.
Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Duong Van Thai briefed on agricultural production of the province. He said the province has been ready for exporting lychee to Japan. 3 companies including Ameii, Chanh Thu and Toan Cau (Global) will participate in the consumption linkage to export to Japan. The first batch of lychee will be exported to Japan in late May.

The province has maintained 149 production unit codes (PUCs) of lychee in 4 districts of Tan Yen, Yen The, Luc Nam and Luc Ngan with total area of over 15,800 hectares expected to yield an output of 94,400 tonnes (taking 60 percent of the total lychee output). 288 units have been granted packaging code by China. The province has constructed some scenarios for export of lychee to respond different situations.
In terms of livestock, the province currently has about 900,000 pigs. Obviously, the drifts of pigs have been quickly recovered and expected to reach more than 1.1 million by the end of the third quarter this year. Besides, the province directed safe recovery of livestock while encouraging large-scale concentrated farming to reduce pork price as expected.
On this occasion, the provincial Chairman requested MARD’s support to invite Aeon Mall- a big retail corporation of Japan to participate in consuming Bac Giang lychee.
Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Bui Van Hai stressed, Bac Giang’s livestock has been recovered in recent 2 years. However, it will take more time for the province to reach the total drift of 1.1 million pigs as planned due to decrease in the drifts of sows. Thus, it is necessary to provide policies and measures to protect and develop sow feeding farms.
Regarding lychee, it is essential to foster circulation of goods amid Covid-19 outbreak. He urged the provincial competent agencies to collaborate with related ministries and central agencies to work with the partners of potential markets for export of lychee while organizing professional forces to join in lychee consumption especially experienced traders.
After the field inspection and meeting with the provincial leaders, Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong highly spoke on the province’s agricultural production output and active involvement of the local party committee, government and people. He urged the province to pay attention to rice disease prevention and follow up weather conditions to timely respond.

He required the province to focus on caring lychee for qualified product while coping with climate changes. He added, the Ministry has paid attention to consumption market with drastic measures for different types of farm produce including Bac Giang lychee, however, there have been numerous difficulties due to impacts of Covid-19 pandemic.
The Minister agreed with the scenarios for lychee consumption of the province but they should comprehensively review each plan. Lychee exported through the border gates of Lang Son, Lao Cai and Quang Ninh must be in official manner while maximizing other markets especially domestic market.
He urged the province to continue agricultural restructuring in which livestock is a breakthrough, striving to make Bac Giang into a belt road to supply food to not only the province but also Hanoi and China.
