More power from every rooftop in Bac Ninh

Updated: 07:32, 04/07/2026

BAC NINH – As electricity demand from manufacturing and households continues to rise, Bac Ninh is accelerating the development of rooftop solar power as a key solution to strengthen energy security, ease pressure on the power grid and support green growth. From industrial parks to residential areas, a growing number of businesses and households are investing in on-site renewable energy systems.

Lucky Dragon Vietnam Co., Ltd., located in Quang Chau Industrial Park, operates on nearly 4.7 hectares with more than 25,000 square meters of factory and warehouse rooftop space.

Workers of BG Solar Co., Ltd. install a rooftop solar power system at the home of Dinh Thi Kim Ngoc on Le Loi Street in Bac Giang Ward.

To secure a stable power supply for production, the company invested nearly 26 billion VND (nearly 989,000 USD) in late 2025 to install a rooftop solar system with a capacity of more than 3.2 MWp.

The system began commercial operation in late April 2026, becoming one of the largest renewable energy projects in the industrial park.

Bac Ninh has nearly 1,380 rooftop solar power systems that are either installed or registered for development, with a combined capacity of about 307 MWp. Of these, nearly 1,100 systems feed electricity into the national grid with a total capacity of around 35 MW.

Tsui Shi Chi, the company's Deputy General Director, said the solar system cuts monthly electricity costs by hundreds of millions of VND while providing a more reliable power supply and reducing the risk of production disruptions during peak demand or power grid outages. The project also helps lower carbon emissions, enabling the company to meet green manufacturing standards and the sustainability requirements of international customers.

Rooftop solar is also gaining popularity among households because of its economic benefits.

The family of Dinh Thi Kim Ngoc on Le Loi Street in Bac Giang Ward, which operates a toy business, previously paid between 4 million VND and 5 million VND for electricity each month, with bills exceeding 9 million VND during peak periods. After assessing the investment, the family spent about 230 million VND to install an 11.1-kW rooftop solar system.

"Our monthly electricity bill is now about 3 million VND to 4 million VND lower than before," Ngoc said.

Luong Van Hung, Director of BG Solar Co., Ltd., said the company has installed nearly 60 rooftop solar systems for households since the beginning of the year.

The average capacity is about 15 kWp per system, while installation costs range from 10 million VND to 14 million VND per kilowatt, depending on the equipment and battery storage options. With an expected service life of around 30 years, rooftop solar systems typically recover their investment within three to six years.

The entire rooftop area of Lucky Dragon Vietnam Co., Ltd.'s factory is equipped with rooftop solar panels.

Driven by their economic and environmental benefits as well as greater energy independence, rooftop solar systems are becoming an increasingly attractive investment for both businesses and households.

Following the Bac Ninh People's Committee's first-round 2026 programme encouraging rooftop solar investment, 58 enterprises had registered projects with a combined planned capacity of 205 MWp by June 2026, equivalent to nearly 40% of the province's first-round target.

The response highlights strong business support for renewable energy development as Bac Ninh seeks to achieve its green growth objectives while ensuring sufficient electricity supplies to sustain economic expansion.
