Bac Giang strictly manages planting area and packaging facility codes
Bac Giang currently has more than 51,000 hectares of fruit trees, ranking second in northern Vietnam. Of which, lychee is the main crop with an area of 29,700 hectares, followed by citrus trees with 10,000 hectares. In recent years, the province's export and sale of agricultural products, especially lychee, have been smooth and effective.

The Sub-department of Crop Production and Plant Protection under the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has just coordinated with the divisions of agriculture and rural development of Luc Ngan, Tan Yen, Yen The, Luc Nam, Son Dong and Lang Giang districts and the economic division of Bac Giang city in inspecting 297 codes for areas growing lychee, longan, watermelon, grapefruit and star apple exported to China, Japan, the United States, Australia, Thailand, and Russia; and 215 others for facilities packing fresh lychees for export to China.
Through the inspections, some localities showed some limitations such as lack of field records, no place to store packaging and no warning signs for pesticide spraying. Therefore, the inspection team has requested them to immediately fix these shortcomings.
With the motto "quality is the core factor", since the year beginning, specialized agencies have reviewed, inspected and resolutely proposed revoking codes of growing areas and packaging facilities that do not meet regulations, avoiding violations to be detected by importing countries, greatly affecting the reputation of the province's agricultural products.
After the revocations, the province currently has 285 export fruit growing area codes, with an area of more than 18,000 hectares. In addition, Bac Giang is maintaining 40 codes of export fresh lychee packaging facilities (39 codes for the Chinese market and one for Japan). Specifically, Luc Ngan district has 34 codes; Tan Yen district two; Luc Nam and Yen The district and Bac Giang city each one.
Le Ba Thanh, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the department has proposed the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and directly its Department of Plant Protection, continue supporting the province in applying advanced farming techniques to increase productivity and quality of agricultural products, ensuring their eligibility for export.
The ministry should negotiate to expand lychee exports via official channels to new markets, fully and promptly update regulations of each market for local authorities to direct implementation.
In addition, the department has required the People's Committees of districts and Bac Giang city to conduct regular reviews and inspections to make dossiers applying for issuance, revocation or cancellation of planting area and packaging facility codes. They must arrange funds to implement pesticide residue monitoring programmes, and direct production under VietGAP, GlobalGAP, and organic standards for key crops for export.
The provincial agricultural sector has directed specialized agencies to periodically monitor growing areas and packaging facilities that have been granted codes, with a frequency of at least once a year.
They have been asked to strengthen inspection and guidance, and hasten localities to manage planting area and packaging facility codes and strictly handle any cases of lending and improper use of such codes.
