Bac Ninh sets sights on tourism as strategic economic pillar

Updated: 10:33, 17/08/2025

BAC NINH - On July 1, 2025, the official merger of Bac Giang and Bac Ninh provinces marked the formation of a new administrative unit: Bac Ninh province. More than an administrative shift, this merger opens up a golden opportunity to turn tourism into one of the province’s strategic spearhead sectors.

The new province stands to gain numerous opportunities for breakthrough development by combining and leveraging the strengths of both localities in terms of cultural and historical heritage, natural landscapes, and economic potential.

Throughout the nation's history, the former provinces of Bac Giang and Bac Ninh shared many similarities in geography, history, and culture.

Both originated from a common cultural root and were closely tied through the unique cultural traditions along the Cau River.

Bac Ninh – Kinh Bac has long been recognised as a sacred land with extraordinary people and the cradle of the ancient Lac Viet civilisation associated with the legend of Kinh Duong Vuong, the forefather of the Vietnamese people.

The modern, diverse commercial infrastructure in Kinh Bac ward contributes to attracting tourists.

It is also the birthplace of the Ly Dynasty, which built and developed the flourishing Dai Viet civilisation and served as a northern stronghold protecting the ancient capital Thang Long – Dong Do – Hanoi with its thousand-year history.

Especially notable is Bac Ninh’s distinction of having seven heritages recognised by UNESCO as either world or regional cultural heritage.

Among them, Quan ho folk singing continues to thrive domestically and internationally, becoming a symbol of Bac Ninh’s cultural-tourism identity and of Vietnamese culture as a whole.

In July 2025, Bac Ninh, along with Hai Phong and Quang Ninh, celebrated a major milestone as UNESCO officially recognised the Yen Tu – Vinh Nghiem – Con Son, Kiep Bac Complex as a World Heritage Site.

Beyond internationally and nationally recognised cultural heritage, Bac Ninh is also home to a vast and diverse treasure trove of folk traditions, reflecting the cultural mosaic of over 20 ethnic communities living together.

The province boasts 1,400 traditional festivals, more than 1,441 ranked historical and cultural sites, 24 national treasures, 33 national intangible cultural heritage pieces, and hundreds of craft villages, traditional performing arts, and unique folk games.

The current Bac Ninh province also holds strong potential for expanding its economic geography, especially in socio-economic development from its geology and terrains, including forests, mountains, valleys, and lakes.

The locality features expansive plains with many well-known traditional craft villages, and many tourism products have already been developed from these natural tourism resources.

Key destinations include Suoi Mo Tourist Area, Tay Yen Tu Spiritual-Ecological Area, Ban Ven Xanh Ecotourism Site, Bau Tien Ecotourism Site, Van Hoa Ho Va Ecotourism Site, and many ongoing urban, tourism, ecological, and resort development projects.

Combining the Quan ho cultural space and Truc Lam Yen Tu Buddhist Zen Sect with highlands scenic spots and fruit-growing areas in the former Bac Giang province expands tourism offerings, prolongs visitor stays, and enhances overall tourism experiences.

Strategically located at the northeastern gateway of Hanoi, Bac Ninh has effectively capitalised on its advantageous position by developing a well-connected and multi-modal transportation system. Especially significant is the Gia Binh International Airport, expected to become operational in 2026.

Additionally, the province continues to attract major investments into eco-urban zones, resort tourism, high-end hotels, and premium accommodation facilities.

The coordinated implementation of these measures will enable Bac Ninh’s tourism to make a strong breakthrough, affirming its position as a leading economic driver.
