Speaking at the ceremony, Nguyen Trong Bac, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, described the tournament as an important regional sporting event that promotes exchanges, professional development and friendship among Southeast Asian nations.

The tournament also aims to honour the martial spirit, discipline, determination and integrity associated with judo, while promoting values of peace, cooperation and sustainable development through sport, organisers said.

For Bac Ninh Province, hosting the event is both an honour and an opportunity to promote the image of the culturally rich Kinh Bac region to international visitors.

Provincial authorities said they had completed preparations related to facilities, security, medical services and event organisation to ensure the tournament run safely and successfully.

The championships run from May 19 to May 24 and bring together 425 participants, including 369 athletes and coaches from the Philippines, Laos, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and host nation Vietnam.

Athletes in both senior and under-23 categories will compete across eight weight divisions for men and women. Kata events will include Nage No Kata, Ju No Kata, Kime No Kata, Katame No Kata and Kodokan Goshin Jutsu.

Mai Son presents commemorative gifts to seven international delegations and referees participating in the tournament.

Host nation Vietnam has fielded a squad of nearly 200 athletes from clubs, provinces and sectors nationwide, aiming to top the medal standings.

Competition events are scheduled from May 21 to May 23 at the Bac Ninh provincial multi-purpose gymnasium.

Organisers said the participation of many of the region’s leading athletes is expected to deliver high-quality contests and contribute to the development of judo in Vietnam and across Southeast Asia.
