Unique Dao ethnic group’s praying-for-good-harvest ritual

Updated: 16:55, 16/04/2026

BAC NINH - On April 15, the People’s Committee of Van Son commune in Bac Ninh province held a praying-for-good-harvest ritual of the Dao ethnic group in Na Hin area, Ga hamlet, for 2026.

According to traditional beliefs, the Dao people in Na Hin live closely with forests and upland fields, relying heavily on natural conditions. This has shaped their spiritual life, with reverence for deities such as the Heaven God, Earth God, Mountain God, Forest God and Water God.

Dao people reenact the praying-for-good-harvest ritual.

The praying-for-good-harvest festival, formed long ago, holds special significance and is closely tied to agricultural production as well as the cultural and spiritual life of the local Dao community.

The event also provides an occasion for residents to express gratitude to their ancestors and deities believed to offer protection and blessings.

The ritual not only helps preserve and promote traditional cultural values but also educates younger generations about their roots, fosters appreciation for labor and strengthens ties to their homeland. This contributes to building a healthier and richer grassroots cultural life.

This year, the ritual was selectively reenacted to ensure authenticity, helping both locals and visitors gain deeper insight into the Dao people’s spiritual cultural space while promoting the preservation of intangible heritage.

Earlier, on April 14 (the 27th day of the second lunar month), the traditional ritual was solemnly held in accordance with ancient customs at a representative household in the hamlet. A ritual master performed ceremonial dances, using bells, wooden swords and traditional tools to lead the ceremony, creating an atmosphere that was both solemn and artistically distinctive.

Following the ritual, a field-commencing ceremony took place, with local leaders and residents sowing the first seeds of the season, expressing hopes for favorable production and abundant harvests.

The festival also featured cultural performances and folk games such as nem con (throwing a cloth ball), shuttlecock kicking and grass pulling, attracting large numbers of locals and visitors.
