Vietnamese-American pickleball star Quang wins singles, doubles titles at Indian event

Updated: 15:23, 04/08/2025

Vietnamese-American pickleball prodigy Quang Duong won two titles at the Monsoon Pickleball Championship 3.0 in Mumbai, India, on Aug. 3.

The event that began on July 31 had attracted more than 800 players who were competing for prize money of US$60,000.

Quang Duong (C) receives gold medal in men's singles at the Monsoon Pickleball Championship in Navi Mumbai, India, Aug. 3, 2025.

Winning five matches in a row on the first day, Quang qualified for the finals of the men's singles and doubles and mixed doubles.

In the men's singles, he played local favorite Aditya Ruhela. He started well, racing to leads of 4-1 and 8-2 in the first set before winning it 11-2.

He also dominated the second set, again leading 7-2 before going on to grab his first title.

After an hour's rest the 19-year-old started the mixed doubles final along with Emilia Schmidt, a former teammate fand a familiar face on the U.S. APP tour.

Their opponents were Megan Fudge Deheart and her husband Ryler of the U.S.

Schimdt and Quang narrowly won the first set 11-10.

The second set too was even before she made several mistakes to let their opponents win 11-7 top force the match into a deciding set.

Both teams fought for each point until reaching 8-8.

But by then Schmidt was exhausted, and the Deheart couple started playing the ball to her. The tactic worked as she made some tired errors to lose 9-11, and with it the final.

In the men's doubles final an hour later Quang paired up with India's Harsh Mehta, the men's doubles champion at the 2025 Panas Malaysia Open, to take on Rob Nunnery and Ryler Deheart.

Mehta was solid and quick, while Quang was technically excellent, and the duo ran out easy 2-0 winners.

Quang was born Duong Thien Quang in California, the U.S., to Vietnamese parents. His father, a former table tennis player, introduced his son to many racket sports early on.

Initially Quang tried his hand at tennis and table tennis before accidentally discovering pickleball in 2020.

He started competing professionally soon, achieving some impressive results in international tournaments and climbing to sixth place in the world men's singles PPA Rankings in July 2025.

A favorite with the local pickleball community, he often returns to Vietnam to compete and interact with them.

He also plays tennis and practices martial arts though not professionally.

In Pickleball Asia's rankings, Quang is currently number one in both men's singles with 6,865 points and men's doubles with 6,602 points.
