Vietnam has seven universities in the top 50 and two in the top 20: the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) ranked 13th and Duy Tan University 19th.
The UEH scored 92.1 out of 100 for research quality, behind only the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University, which lead the Southeast Asian rankings and are also among the world's top universities in many global tables.
Duy Tan University also received a high research quality score of 91.9 out of 100. In the teaching category, Hanoi Medical University was the highest-ranked Vietnamese institution, scoring 32 out of 100.
THE is one of the three most influential global university ranking organizations. The group said the Southeast Asia ranking is currently being piloted ahead of an official launch.
A total of 195 universities across the ASEAN region were evaluated using 18 indicators, similar to those used in THE's global rankings. The criteria are divided into five categories: teaching (learning environment) which accounts for 30%; research (environment, volume and reputation) 35%; citations (research impact) 33%; international outlook (staff and students); and industry income (innovation).
Of the institutions evaluated, 104 received a specific rank based on their performance across these core missions, while 91 were listed as "reporters," meaning they submitted data but did not meet the full eligibility criteria, such as the research publication threshold, to receive a formal ranking in this edition.
The pilot ranking includes universities from eight countries within the 11-member ASEAN bloc - Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Institutions must have at least 1,000 scientific publications over the past five years to qualify for THE rankings. The organization said it plans to lower this threshold in future editions to allow more universities to participate.
