Bac Ninh increases lychee production quality to offset productivity

Updated: 08:28, 16/04/2026

BAC NINH- This year, lychee productivity is predicted to be lower than the same period last year due to the impact of weather conditions. This time, farmers in some localities are focusing on tending their lychee crops with the aim of improving quality and increasing value to offset the decline in output.

These days, Nguyen Van Cuong in Quat Du 2, Phuc Hoa commune has been busy with caring lychee. His family’s lychee gardens reach the fruit set rate of nearly 80 percent.

Engineer of the Sub-department of Crop Production and Plant Protection guides farmers in Trung village, Phuc Hoa commune to care lychee for export.

He continued to register the planting area code to export to the US, Japan and Europe. In line with caring for quality, this year his family will attend the “Beautiful lychee gardens” contest hosted by the commune.

In Luc Ngan commune, the province’s major lychee orchard, the “Beautiful lychee gardens” contest also attracts a large number of participants.

More than 100 gardens at a scale of 0.7 hectares or higher with plants aged from 5 years old registered to participate in the contest. Most of the gardens focus on filing, recording production diary and ensuring origin traceability.

Several models apply VietGAP, GlobalGAP or organic production procedures and launch digital farming diary.

According to An Minh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the communal people’s committee, the competition is a good measure to promote production in professional and sustainable manner.

Specific criteria on production scale, techniques, productivity, landscape and export potential have helped to change farmers’ production mindset from small-scale farming to high-quality commercial production, while strengthening linkages in product consumption.

The commune will select 12 most beautiful gardens in late June to serve tourists to experience and promote the products.

The “Beautiful lychee gardens” contest is a new feature of this lychee season, which combines production with developing experience tourism.

Since May, the gardeners will beautify landscape, install direction signs, decorate check-in spots and arrange nice stops. Farmers will be trained reception skills to serve tourists in lychee season.

Businesses inspect the lychee growing area for export in Phuc Hoa commune.

In recent ten years, Bac Ninh lychee has affirmed its position in domestic and international markets with its beautiful appearance, signature sweet flavour, attractive colours and high nutritious values.

This year, the province maintains nearly 30,000 hectares of lychee including 8,200 hectares early-ripen lychee and 21,600 hectares of main-crop lychee. The harvest time is expected from late May to middle July.

At present, the provincial People’s Committee and the key communes and wards producing lychee such as Phuc Hoa, Phuong Son, Chu and Luc Ngan are proactively working with firms and big farm produce importers in the region and worldwide to seek linkage and assistance in purchasing, processing, packaging and processing products for export.
