Luc Ngan has more than 20,000 ha of lychee, with total production estimated at 150,000 tonnes, earning thousands of billions of VND per year. In June 2016, an expert team from the Japan Food Technology Department came to work with the Luc Ngan district People's Committee on the building of the geographical indication for the local lychee.

The policy of bringing lychee to Japan is good news for lychee growers because 90 percent of the product has only been consumed domestically and exported to China while the rest shipped to countries such as the US, Australia and Thailand and the Netherlands...

To get approval and certification of the geographical indication, products must meet technical standards in production processes, variety limits, management mechanisms for stamps, labels and logos, and other related administrative procedures in accordance with regulations as well as Japanese inspection steps.

Accordingly, the district People's Committee has built the project "Fruit tree growing area applying high technology in Tan Moc commune for 2018-2020" on over 300 hectares. The whole project area must comply with VietGAP and GlobalGAP cultivation procedures and follow modern preservation technology with traceability barcodes.

The specialized agencies of the district have instructed people in other communes to produce lychee according to VietGAP process, on more than 11,000 hectares; and granted international-standard codes for 18 gardens.

According to Ngo Chi Vinh, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Science and Technology, Luc Ngan lychee is the only agricultural product in the province that has already got a domestic geographical indication. If successful, it will be the first product of Bac Giang with geographical indication abroad, creating great opportunities for its exports.

Raising responsibility of growers

Le Ba Thanh, Vice Chairman of the district People's Committee, said that the locality still faces some difficulties in satisfying 12 criteria in the registration dossier. For example, production is still scattered, leading to problems in management and control of processes and product quality. There are not many lychee areas meeting VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards.

In order to solve the above-mentioned limitations, immediately after the province had an orientation to register for a geographical indication, the locality and specialized agencies have stepped up communication work to encourage locals to join in production linkages under advanced ways; and use science and technology to improve product quality. 

According to statistics from the Luc Ngan Lychee Production and Consumption Association, the district has established 30 association branches and 455 cooperative groups to produce lychee up to VietGAP process, an increase of 700 hectares compared to 2017.

Not only that, the district has actively invested in implementing projects on lychee preservation such as National agricultural product development; key production areas and models applying production, harvesting and preservation processes according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP, modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), Israeli technology and CAS.

Ngo Chi Vinh further said that in addition to the district's positive solutions, resolving the above-mentioned problem thoroughly requires consensus and special attention from authorities, scientists, businesses and producers. In the lychee cultivation process, along with administrative procedures, lychee farming households need to strictly follow the criteria set by partners.

Luc Ngan district should continue to pay attention to helping people with lychee growing and caring techniques in order to increase the number of certified households; and promote the traceability stamping, ensuring the labelling standards. Competent agencies need to coordinate with enterprises in trade promotion, thus increasing income from lychee many times higher than that in reality.

(BGO) – A delegation of Japanese experts has paid a field trip to Bac Giang province to survey the lychee growing and caring procedures under VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards in Thanh Hai commune, Luc Ngan district. The result will be a proof to build the geological indication (GI) for the local lychee in Japan.
