Role of traditional arts in cultural diplomacy

Updated: 15:02, 18/07/2025

At the recent workshop on reviewing the movement and development of Vietnamese literature and arts over 50 years after national reunification, artists and researchers emphasised the role of traditional arts in political and diplomatic events.

Faced with the situation that many traditional art forms such as tuong (classical drama), cheo (traditional opera), ca tru (ceremonial singing) are gradually losing their position due to a lack of successors, less public interest, and pressure from modern forms of entertainment, creative efforts and innovative approaches are making practical contributions to the preservation of these valuable heritages.

Hue Royal Court Music was performed on the occasion of General Secretary To Lam and his spouse Ngo Phuong Ly accompanying French President Emmanuel Macron and his spouse Brigitte Macron during their visit to the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam on May 26, 2025.

In addition, amid deep international integration, the expansion of diplomatic relations is creating conditions for traditional art to be vividly present in reception and foreign affairs events.

This solution is considered an effective way to position and attract attention to traditional art forms in contemporary life.

A typical example of this approach is the performance of Hue Royal Court Music for French President Emmanuel Macron during his official visit to Viet Nam in May.

The programme demonstrates that traditional art is capable of taking on the role of cultural ambassador in national foreign affairs activities.

Recently, at the World Expo 2025 Osaka in Japan, which will take place until October, the Viet Nam Exhibition House is actively introducing and promoting the image of the country, people and culture to the international public through special performances such as: water puppetry, lotus dance, concerts of zither, monochord, T'rung, K'long put, bamboo flute, and traditional drums.

These programmes are vivid evidence of the policy of both preserving and promoting the value of heritage in modern society and affirming the importance of traditional arts in the journey of sustainable development of the national literature and arts.

Organising traditional art performances at state ceremonies, international conferences, cultural weeks or exhibitions is deeply meaningful. In the foreign affairs perspective, this is an effective way to promote the country's image and affirm the depth of national culture.

Introducing folk art at political and diplomatic events has created motivation for artists to maintain their profession and practice creativity.

Appearance in important events is also an opportunity for traditional art to be introduced, honoured and promote awareness of preserving national cultural identity.

This approach is highly appreciated for its practicality and ability to preserve intangible cultural heritage along with other activities such as maintaining club activities, implementing performance models, dramatisation, training and teaching.

However, to promote this direction effectively and sustainably, managers believe that it needs to be implemented systematically with a strategic vision and synchronous investment. Traditional art must be recognised as an important element in the country's cultural diplomacy.

The state needs to develop systematic investment policies with clear orientations and coordination mechanisms among ministries, sectors and localities.

Functional agencies such as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs need to coordinate closely in developing plans and selecting performances suitable for each event, audience and partner country.

In addition, art units are responsible for building high-quality, exemplary programs that both preserve core values, perform flexibly and make it easy to access international-style performances.

The contents of the programs are elaborately staged, with bilingual narration in English or local languages to help the audience deeply understand Vietnamese culture.

Artists participating in performances in foreign affairs activities must be specially trained, proficient in basic foreign languages, have high professional standards, and master performance skills in line with the international stage.
