Bac Ninh diversifies products, expands fine woodcraft market

Updated: 07:22, 04/04/2026

BAC NINH – In recent years, the business community and fine woodcraft producers in traditional craft villages across Bac Ninh province have faced numerous challenges as their key export market - China - has declined sharply. In this context, many workshops have had to suspend operations or switch to other trades. However, there are still “bright spots” that continue to grow steadily by proactively innovating to adapt to market fluctuations.

A typical example is Hiep Thang Fine Woodcraft Cooperative in Phu Khe ward. In recent years, the cooperative has boldly shifted toward producing wooden landscape paintings, relief sculptures, interior decorative panels, mascots, and similar items, targeting domestic customers who appreciate these product lines.

To ensure product quality and meet consumer demand and tastes, the cooperative regularly conducts research and training to improve workers’ skills, while creating new products aligned with market trends.

Meritorious Artisan Nguyen Tran Hiep, Director of the cooperative, shared that when transitioning to new product lines, the cooperative does not produce on a mass scale. Each item is a unique piece, going through seven meticulous stages from design to hand carving.

This “slow but steady” approach - focusing on self-designed works and custom-made orders - has helped Hiep Thang Fine Woodcraft Cooperative win over many customers.

Currently, the cooperative operates four production facilities, generates nearly 7 billion VND (265,760 USD) in annual revenue, and provides stable employment for more than 60 local workers.

Similarly, many woodcraft businesses in the province have not only refined their craftsmanship but also proactively restructured their product portfolios to better match real market demand. Huong Mai Fine Woodcraft Company Limited in Dong Nguyen ward is a clear example of such adaptability.

The company has shifted toward spiritual wood products and highly personalised interior items. Instead of mass production, it focuses on “depth” - refining traditional products and offering customised design consulting services.

Vu Thi Mai, the company’s General Director, said: “We are willing to send technical staff directly to clients’ homes to take measurements and provide consultation based on their living space and aesthetic preferences. As a result, we continue to receive steady orders from demanding markets such as the United States, Germany, and Japan, especially orders for Buddha statues for large temples abroad.”

Flexibility is also evident at Truong Giang Investment Company Limited in Phu Khe ward and Viet Ha Fine Woodcraft Company Limited in Dong Nguyen ward.

Instead of relying entirely on exports, these businesses have shifted to strongly tap into the domestic market with interior furniture designed for modern apartments and villas. The application of digital technology and the promotion of online sales have enabled them to reach customers quickly while reducing intermediary costs.
