Nguyen Thi Oanh wins four gold medals at Vietnam national athletics championships

Updated: 13:41, 14/08/2025

BAC NINH – Nguyen Thi Oanh reaffirmed her status as Vietnam’s top female runner on August 13, claiming victory in the women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase at the 2025 National Athletics Championships to bring her total gold medal haul at the event to four.

The championships, held from August 5-15 at Hoa Xuan Stadium in Da Nang, brought together more than 480 athletes from 32 teams nationwide to compete for 50 sets of medals in men’s, women’s and relay events.

Nguyen Thi Oanh competes in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase on the afternoon of Aug. 13.

The tournament is a key fixture in the domestic athletics calendar and serves as a selection ground for Vietnam’s squad for the 33rd SEA Games.

Dubbed the “queen of athletics,” Oanh dominated all four events she entered: the 1,500m, 5,000m, 10,000m and 3,000m steeplechase.

In the opening 5,000m, rivals kept a close chase, but Oanh’s superior endurance and racecraft allowed her to break away and finish first in 16 minutes 28.78 seconds. The win gave her a confident start to the competition.

In the 10,000m, she deployed a “drafting” tactic for much of the race, running behind strong competitors such as Pham Thi Hong Le, Le Thi Tuyet and Bui Thi Thu Ha. In the final stretch, she surged ahead to win in 33 minutes 56.11 seconds, followed by Tuyet in 34:05 and Thu Ha in 35:28.42.

Over shorter distances such as the 1,500m, Oanh maintained a steady pace before unleashing a powerful kick on the final lap to cross the line in 4 minutes 16.97 seconds. In the demanding 3,000m steeplechase, she combined stamina with agility to finish in 10 minutes 14.22 seconds.

With a clean sweep of four gold medals in all her events, Oanh has set a strong platform for her campaign at the 33rd SEA Games.
