BAC NINH - The 2025 Vietnam National Athletics Championships officially opened on August 9 at Hoa Xuan Stadium in Da Nang. On the first day of competition, “athletics queen” Nguyen Thi Oanh from Bac Ninh province claimed the gold medal in the women’s 5,000m event.

From the starting gun, competitors pushed hard for the lead. But with the class and composure that have kept her at the top of this distance for years, Oanh quickly broke away, maintained a safe gap and crossed the finish line first in 16 minutes 28.78 seconds to secure gold.
The victory reinforced the reigning champion’s consistency and strength. In May 2025, at the Asian Championships, Oanh set a national record in the same distance with a time of 15 minutes 46.11 seconds.
The 2025 national championships gather more than 480 athletes from 32 teams nationwide, competing for 50 sets of medals in men’s, women’s and relay events. This year’s competition features many of Vietnam’s top track and field names.
Alongside Oanh, Bac Ninh’s delegation includes eight other athletes: Pham Tien San, Hoang Viet Vi Ly, Son Tien Phat, Le Thuy Linh, Nguyen Van Bao, Vu Minh Thang, Nguyen Hai Yen and Pham Cong Dung.
Results from the tournament will serve as a key criterion for the coaching staff of Vietnam’s national athletics team in selecting the squad for the 33rd Southeast Asian Games.
