Unique Dong Ho folk painting art

Updated: 10:21, 10/12/2025

BAC NINH - At 14:38 Indian time (16:08 Vietnam time) on December 9, at the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in New Delhi, UNESCO officially inscribed Vietnam’s Dong Ho folk painting craft on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

Dong Ho folk paintings (Thuan Thanh ward) combine unique traditional knowledge, refined woodblock printing techniques and fully natural colours. The craft vividly reflects the life, customs and aspirations of Vietnamese people. The inscription bears deep significance for the heritage community and the people of Bac Ninh province.

Artisan Nguyen Huu Hoa introduces and guides Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Chinese Premier Li Qiang in printing Dong Ho folk paintings.

Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan and Bac Ninh provincial leaders experience Dong Ho printing techniques at an exhibition space celebrating Bac Ninh’s first Emulation Congress for the 2025–2030 period (September 2025).

At the exhibition area marking the first Bac Ninh Provincial Party Congress for the 2025–2030 term (September 2025), artisan Nguyen Huu Hoa presents a Dong Ho folk painting to Nguyen Duy Ngoc, Politburo member and Chairman of the Central Inspection Commission, and to Provincial Party Secretary Nguyen Hong Thai.

Meritorious Artisan Nguyen Thi Oanh demonstrates the technique of brush painting and colour shading.

Young artisan Nguyen Huu Dao demonstrates woodblock carving, a demanding technique that requires fine craftsmanship to create strong, delicate and expressive lines.

Artisan Nguyen Dang Tam (son of Meritorious Artisan Nguyen Dang Che) pounds scallop shells to make natural materials at his family’s workshop in Dong Khe quarter, Thuan Thanh ward.

Dong Ho paintings typically feature five colours. After printing all the colour layers, artisans print a black-outline woodblock to frame and define the details.

Dong Ho paintings are produced by applying colour onto the woodblock and pressing it onto Diep paper, then rubbing the back of the paper with a loofah pad so the colours or lines adhere evenly.

International visitors experience woodblock printing at the Dong Ho Folk Painting Preservation Centre (Thuan Thanh ward).

The Dong Ho Folk Painting Preservation Centre, built by Bac Ninh province on an area of more than 2,000 square metres and opened in 2022, attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year.
