Vietnam sets Southeast Asian football record with U23 title
Vietnam has become the first men's team to win the ASEAN U23 Championship three times in a row, following a 1-0 victory over Indonesia in the final.
The victory at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Tuesday night was Vietnam's third consecutive title, after winning it in 2022 and 2023.

After five times the tournament has been held, Vietnam has won more championships than all other teams combined.
Beyond the U23 level, Vietnam is also the first Southeast Asian nation to win a regional men's football championship three consecutive times. In other tournaments, such as the U16, U19 and the ASEAN Cup (formerly Tiger Cup and AFF Cup), no team has ever won more than two titles in a row.
In the U16 tournament, Myanmar is the only team to have defended their title, winning in 2002 and again in 2005.
At the U19 level, Myanmar again won back-to-back titles in 2003 and 2005. No team has defended the crown since.
In the national team level tournament ASEAN Cup, Thailand’s attempt to win the title three times was broken by Singapore in 2004, and by Vietnam in 2018 and 2024. Singapore also claimed back-to-back titles, but Vietnam prevented them from winning it the third time in 2008.
The 2025 ASEAN U23 title also marked a personal milestone for coach Kim Sang-sik, who became the first head coach to win both the ASEAN Cup and the ASEAN U23 Championship. His next goal is to complete the hat-trick with a gold medal at the SEA Games 33 this December.
If successful, Kim will match the title haul of former head coach Park Hang-seo, who led Vietnam to the 2018 AFF Cup and consecutive SEA Games gold medals in 2019 and 2021.
The 2025 ASEAN U23 Championship took place from July 15 to 29, featuring 10 teams, without Australia. In the previous two editions, Vietnam won the title under coaches Dinh The Nam and Hoang Anh Tuan. This time, coach Kim took charge and brought home another title from Indonesia, completing the three-peat.
The final also set a new regional record for striker Nguyen Quoc Viet, who became the first player to win the ASEAN U23 Championship three times. Viet was part of the championship squads in 2022, 2023 and 2025.
