Vietnam War film 'Red Rain' becomes nation’s biggest box office hit with 8.1 million viewers

Updated: 09:00, 29/09/2025

Vietnam War film “Mua Do” (Red Rain) has broken every box office record in the country, attracting 8.1 million viewers and grossing VND710 billion ($28 million) by Saturday, making it the most-watched Vietnamese film of all time.

In its final week before ending theatrical screenings next Monday, the movie continued to pack cinemas, with major theaters running 8–10 sold-out showings a day.

Vietnamese actor Dinh Khang plays "Tu" in "Mua Do".

Audiences have responded with overwhelming emotion. On the film’s fanpage, viewer Tran Chau Doan wrote: "Thank you to the director, screenwriter, and the crew for creating such an emotional work. At times my throat tightened watching each character’s sacrifice. See you again on other platforms."

Another, Ha Minh, said: "This film goes beyond cinema to become part of the memory of many generations. I believe Red Rain will live forever in people’s hearts."

The movie has become a cultural phenomenon. For the first time, a historical war drama turned into a nationwide event, with schools and organizations buying thousands of tickets for veterans, students, and pupils.

Praised for its sweeping battle sequences and emotional storytelling inspired by real events, the film has also drawn debate over its combat scenes and character building. Director Dang Thai Huyen said she read and listened to all feedback but could only select what fit the narrative.

The film depicts the Second Battle of Quang Tri in the Vietnam War in 1972.

Scriptwriter Chu Lai focuses on the lives of a squad of soldiers from different regions. The main character, Cuong, a martial arts-trained conservatory student, gives up the opportunity to study abroad to enlist.

Under the leadership of Ta, he and his squadmates, Binh, Tu, Hai, and Sen, battle side by side, overcoming their different backgrounds and personalities.

Produced on a large scale, the film was shot on a 50-hectare set built along the Thach Han River in Quang Tri. The production employed advanced equipment, including up to seven cameras for major battle scenes.
