Bac Ninh launches major projects to boost economic growth

Updated: 17:23, 01/09/2025

BAC NINH - With its strategic location as the northern gateway to the capital Hanoi, Bac Ninh province is accelerating large-scale infrastructure and industrial projects aimed at driving investment and strengthening regional connectivity. From a new international airport to industrial parks and expressways, the northern province is seeking to create momentum for what officials call an economic “take-off.”

New international airport in Gia Binh

The Gia Binh International Airport project, covering nearly 2,000 hectares and located 40 km from central Hanoi, is set to become a major aviation hub for the capital and northern Vietnam.

The construction unit is mobilizing equipment and manpower to speed up work on Gia Binh International Airport.

Designed as a level 4E airport under international standards, the facility will serve both civilian and defense purposes, with the ambition of becoming a next-generation “smart airport.”

Planned facilities include two runways, passenger and VIP terminals, logistics and technical areas, with capacity to handle 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tonnes of cargo annually by 2030. Expansion beyond 2030 foresees four runways, boosting capacity to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tonnes of cargo each year.

Authorities also aim to rank the airport among the world’s ten most modern and user-friendly by 2037. Construction officially began on August 19, with contractors mobilizing equipment and manpower to meet tight schedules.

Provincial officials describe the project as a “proud bird in the sky of the Northeast,” expected to enhance Bac Ninh’s role in global trade and connectivity.

Expressway linking Hanoi and the airport

In parallel, the government has approved construction of a 35-km highway connecting Gia Binh International Airport with Hanoi.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has called for the route to be “the fastest, straightest, most beautiful and most efficient,” noting its importance in promoting Vietnam’s image abroad, attracting investment and boosting tourism.

The highway will have a cross-section of up to 120 meters, with total investment estimated at 71.15 trillion VND (3.1 billion USD). The Hanoi section will stretch 14 km, costing 42.45 trillion VND while the Bac Ninh section will run 21 km with an investment of 28.7 trillion VND.

Some portions will be newly built, while others will upgrade existing expressways such as Hanoi–Thai Nguyen and the Ring Road 3, expanding them from 35 to 120 meters. The project is expected to significantly shorten travel time to the capital and ease pressure on current national highways, while also spurring urban and industrial development along the route.

Song Mai–Nghia Trung industrial park

Alongside transport projects, Bac Ninh is also accelerating industrial park development. On the eve of Vietnam’s National Day, the Hanoi–Bac Giang Industrial Infrastructure Development JSC broke ground on the Song Mai–Nghia Trung Industrial Park.

The park, with an investment of over 2.8 trillion VND covers 197 hectares in Viet Yen and Da Mai wards. Its design includes factories, technical facilities, modern wastewater treatment, worker and expert housing, and supporting services.

A highlight is a dedicated living and service area for employees, aimed at creating a professional and sustainable working environment.

Within four months of approval, the investor completed compensation and site clearance for 50 hectares in phase one, and received an additional 90 hectares from the provincial government, raising the total to nearly 140 hectares. Construction is now underway, with authorities pledging close coordination to attract secondary investors.

“Green lane” policy to fast-track projects

To speed up strategic projects, the provincial People’s Committee has introduced a “24-hour green lane” and “60% green lane” mechanism for administrative procedures.

Vuong Quoc Tuan, Chairman of Bac Ninh’s People’s Committee, said the policy is designed to accelerate investment, particularly in infrastructure, by cutting red tape and clarifying responsibilities of departments. Priority projects will be regularly updated to ensure timely implementation, he added.

He urged local authorities to work closely with investors in land clearance and guarantee transparent, daily supervision of administrative processes.

He also called for public support, saying rapid progress would not only generate local economic value but also open new space for growth and help Bac Ninh gain momentum in Vietnam’s modernization drive.
