Public consensus drives Gia Binh airport project

Updated: 11:33, 22/08/2025

BAC NINH – Vietnam on August 19 broke ground on Gia Binh International Airport, a national key project seen as a strategic gateway for Hanoi and the northern region, backed by strong political will and broad public support.

The airport, located within the Hanoi–Bac Ninh–Hai Phong economic triangle, is designed to ease congestion at Noi Bai International Airport and strengthen northern Vietnam’s aviation capacity.

Contractors mobilize machinery and equipment for construction.

Once completed, it is expected to handle 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tonnes of cargo annually by 2030, before expanding to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tonnes after 2030.

Built to 4E international standards, the airport will serve both civilian and defense purposes and is planned as a smart, next-generation hub. Construction will include two runways, passenger and VIP terminals as well as logistics facilities.

Gia Binh International Airport is planned as a 4E-grade facility covering nearly 2,000 hectares with two runways. By 2030, it is expected to handle 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tonnes of cargo annually, rising to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tonnes of cargo by 2050.

New connecting roads, including a 120-meter-wide highway linking Hanoi with the airport, will be built in parallel to boost regional growth.

The government has set December 2026 as the deadline to complete the first phase, in time to welcome international flights for the APEC summit. Authorities have described the project as vital for Vietnam’s industrial and logistics ambitions and a symbol of the nation’s development aspirations.

The site covers nearly 2,000 hectares across several communes, affecting around 20,000 residents, 4,500 households, 46 cemeteries and 41 religious sites. Provincial authorities emphasized that resettlement areas must be modern and fair, ensuring the highest possible benefits for affected families.

By late July, Gia Binh commune completed clearance of 4.3 hectares of farmland to prepare for the groundbreaking ceremony. Residents have largely supported the project despite personal sacrifices.

“My family has to relocate nearly 30 graves and give up three plots of farmland, but we all agree to contribute for the common good,” said Vu Thi Tu, a villager in Gia Binh.

Nguyen Van Kim’s family will move from their home and farmland after the state reclaimed about one hectare, including 13 graves.

“We see this airport not only as an economic driver but also a source of pride for our homeland,” Kim said.

At the ceremony, the Ministry of Public Security honored 27 households for their cooperation in land clearance. Minister Luong Tam Quang praised both local authorities and residents for their consensus, urging continued cooperation to ensure timely progress.

The developer, Masterise Group, pledged to mobilize all resources and adopt efficient, safe construction methods.

“We are committed to delivering this project on schedule and to the highest standards,” said Nguyen Thi Thu Tra, Deputy General Director.

Following the groundbreaking, authorities are accelerating compensation and land clearance across Gia Binh and neighboring communes. So far, about 130 hectares of farmland have been cleared. Roughly 759 hectares remain and local governments are working with provincial agencies to plan resettlement areas and relocate cemeteries.

With close oversight from the central government and the cooperation of Bac Ninh province and local communities, officials said the Gia Binh International Airport project is on track to complete its first phase by the end of 2026. The airport is expected to become a flagship infrastructure project, advancing Vietnam’s ambition for rapid and sustainable growth.
