Everyone regardless of men, women, elderly or young people in the village loves wrestling. At every village festival, the locals left their works behind to go watching wrestling competitions from early morning until the end of the day.

The passion for this traditional sport has been cherished since then. Especially, Anh and Vuong have been taught by their grandfather, an experience wrestler in the village.

Anh and Vuong were discovered at an athlete tryout of the provincial Center for Sports Training and Competition in 2012 by coach Tran Cong Bac, who guided them to pursue the professional career.

“I was 12 and my brother Vuong was 11 at that time. It was not easy for us on the very first days we lived far away from home and embarked on the journey of intense training. The daily training was very hard with higher and higher requirements. Sometimes we cried because of homesickness. However, we have overcome all difficulties to gain success thanks to the encouragement and support by our coaches and family”, Tran Thi Anh recalled.

Anh is only 1 year older than Vuong, thus they are like 2 close friends, who can share everything with each other. After training time with the team, they both practice together, remedy other’s shortcomings and encourage each other to improve themselves.

After 1 year in the talented team, Anh and Vuong were selected to compete at youth tournaments to gain experience. Anh’s achievements began to be recognised in 2013 when she participated in the national wrestling championships for the first time and won a gold medal at 13 to 15-year-old category.

1 year later, Vuong also bagged his first bronze medal at this arena. These siblings have become the core athletes of Bac Ninh wrestling team and accompanies each other in different tournaments.

They always secure either a gold or silver medal at annual National Wrestling Championship, Classical Wrestling and Freestyle Wrestling Championship.

The number of medals Anh and Vuong bagged at different competitions reached around 80. Their excellent performance helped them to be chosen to the national team and compete at international arenas.

The most memorable experience for the sports-loving siblings was when they participated in the 2016 Southeast Asian Wrestling Championship held in Thailand. At their first international tournament together, they both excellently came to the finals.

Tran Thi Anh competed first and claimed the prestigious gold medal. Building on that success, Tran Thi Anh and Tran The Vuong consecutively won gold medals at the Southeast Asian Wrestling Championships in 2017 and 2018.

At the 2022 National Sports Games, Tran Thi Anh had an outstanding performance, winning a gold medal in the women’s freestyle wrestling 65 kg category while her brother Tran The Vuong bagged a bronze medal in the men’s freestyle 69 kg category.

Tran Thi Anh is currently training intensively in preparation for the 33rd SEA Games, taking place in Thailand at the end of 2025 targeting the gold medal in the women’s freestyle 57 kg category.

Due to personal reasons, Tran The Vuong will not compete at this SEA Games, but he will be a strong supporter, cheering wholeheartedly for his sister to achieve her target.

Moving on together, the siblings continue encouraging each other to make greater efforts on the journey to achieve their dreams.
