Joining hands to contribute to world peace and development

Updated: 15:27, 23/07/2025

With positive, innovative and effective contributions, Viet Nam has made a distinct mark at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), conveying the image of a dynamic and responsible member striving to contribute to global peace, democracy and equality.

Through this forum, the friendly and cooperative relationship between the Vietnamese National Assembly and parliaments of other countries has been further strengthened.

With 181 members and 15 associate members, the IPU is the centre of parliamentary diplomacy worldwide, working towards the goal of promoting peace, democracy and cooperation among peoples and parliaments. Since joining the IPU in 1979, the Vietnamese National Assembly has consistently been an active and responsible member.

Participating in IPU activities is considered a top priority for the Vietnamese National Assembly’s multilateral parliamentary diplomacy, aimed at promoting and protecting national interests, considering other countries’ viewpoints, and expressing positions on international issues of shared concern.

The Vietnamese National Assembly has held many important positions at the IPU, including Chair of the Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group within the IPU Assembly (in 2006 and 2016), and Chair of the ASEAN+3 Group. Representatives of the Vietnamese National Assembly have been elected twice to the IPU Executive Committee, each for a four-year term.

Viet Nam has also made its mark at the IPU through practical contributions aimed at promoting the IPU’s agenda for peace, cooperation and sustainable development.

The Vietnamese National Assembly has presided over and hosted numerous activities within the IPU, notably the 132nd IPU Assembly with the Hanoi Declaration on promoting parliamentary action in implementing the sustainable development goals, the 9th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians, and other regional conferences.

The active participation of the Vietnamese National Assembly at the IPU not only contributes significantly to enhancing the country’s position on the international stage but also serves as clear evidence of Viet Nam’s strong support for multilateralism, as well as the IPU’s role.

The city of Geneva in Switzerland is home to the headquarters of many UN agencies and international organisations, including the IPU.

Located in Europe, Switzerland is not only renowned for its magnificent natural scenery, robust industrial production and one of the world’s highest living standards, but also for being a country with a neutral foreign policy that constantly strives to build peaceful, cooperative relations and mutual development with all nations.

During visits to Geneva to participate in IPU activities, Vietnamese leaders regularly meet, exchange views and work with Swiss leaders, thereby strengthening the relationship that transcends the geographic distance between the two countries.

As one of the first Western European countries to recognise and establish diplomatic relations with Viet Nam, Switzerland has long been a friend and a close and trusted partner of Viet Nam, despite the two countries being located on different continents.

In January 2025, Vietnamese and Swiss leaders agreed in principle to elevate bilateral relations to a comprehensive partnership, creating an important foundation to open a new and promising chapter in the history of bilateral relations.

Switzerland is an important trading partner of Viet Nam in Europe, and Viet Nam is Switzerland’s fourth-largest trading partner within ASEAN. Viet Nam is proving to be a promising investment destination for Swiss businesses.

According to the Viet Nam News Agency, Switzerland’s La Tribune des Nations website published an article praising Viet Nam’s economic achievements and investment environment.

The article clearly stated that Viet Nam is affirming its increasingly strong position as a key factor in the global economy, noting that this Southeast Asian nation is attracting growing interest from investors and businesses worldwide.

Swiss media also praised the Vietnamese government’s encouragement of innovation and transition to a digital economy.

As the global economy continues to witness fragmentation, strengthening cooperation and solidarity, and joining forces to address challenges are the inevitable path for mutual development.

The Vietnamese National Assembly is committed to continuing to nurture and promote good relations with parliaments of IPU members, including the Swiss parliament, delivering tangible benefits to the people of all countries.
