The project has undergone key adjustments in its planning to elevate Gia Binh Airport into Vietnam’s second-largest international airport, classified as a 4E-grade facility.
Accordingly, the airport has been officially included in the national airport development master plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a long-term vision to 2050.
Under the plan, Gia Binh International Airport is designed to handle 30 million passengers and 250,000 tonnes of cargo annually by 2030, and up to 50 million passengers and 1 million tonnes of cargo per year by 2050.

Progress of the Gia Binh International Airport project is accelerated. |
It will be capable of accommodating wide-body, long-haul aircraft such as Boeing 777, Boeing 787, and Airbus A350, with a runway and technical infrastructure meeting the highest international safety standards.
According to Decision No. 1102/QD-BXD issued by the Ministry of Construction on July 20, 2025, the total planned area of the airport has been expanded to approximately 1,960 hectares.
In Gia Binh commune alone, the land clearance for Phase 2 of the project (excluding the 125 hectares cleared in Phase 1 and the central axis road) is estimated at 759.6 hectares, posing significant challenges in compensation and resettlement.
To achieve broad consensus on land clearance, Gia Binh commune has developed and implemented a scientifically organised communication strategy.
In July 2025, the commune established a project steering committee composed of 15 members, led by the Secretary of the communal Party Committee.
A series of public meetings have been held to explain each component of the project, alongside government policies on land acquisition, compensation, and support.
“All project information and land clearance procedures have been conducted transparently and democratically. This has fostered strong public trust,” emphasised Luong Trung Hau, Chairman of the Gia Binh communal People’s Committee and standing deputy head of the Steering Committee for the implementation of Gia Binh International Airport and associated projects.
Meanwhile, both local authorities and residents have raised several recommendations for higher-level consideration.

These include a proposal for a special mechanism allowing Bac Ninh provincial People's Committee to apply streamlined procedures for compensation and resettlement ahead of the official investment adjustment approval from the National Assembly.
Such measures are seen as crucial to keeping the project on schedule while safeguarding the rights and interests of affected residents.
With strong political will from local authorities, the support of the people, and timely interventions from higher-level bodies, there is high confidence that the Gia Binh International Airport project will break ground as planned and progress on schedule.
More than just a key infrastructure project, the airport is expected to unlock transformative socio-economic opportunities for Gia Binh and Bac Ninh province as a whole.
