Groundbreaking ceremony held for Gia Binh International Airport
BAC NINH — The Ministry of Public Security held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Gia Binh International Airport project in Gia Binh commune, Bac Ninh province on August 19 morning.
This is one of 80 key projects launched or inaugurated nationwide in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day (September 2, 1945 – 2025).

The ceremony was broadcast live and connected online with project sites across all three regions of the country.
The event was attended and chaired by General Luong Tam Quang, Politburo member, Secretary of the Central Public Security Party Committee, and Minister of Public Security. Senior officials from central ministries and agencies also participated.

Attendees from Bac Ninh province included Nguyen Van Gau, member of the Party Central Committee and Secretary of the provincial Party Committee; and Dao Quang Khai, member of the Standing Board of the provincial Party Committee and Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee.
Positioned just 40 km from downtown Hanoi, Gia Binh International Airport is not only a major transportation infrastructure project but is also envisioned as a new national symbol.

The airport, covering nearly 2,000 hectares, is designated as a national-level key project, serving as not only an aviation gateway for Hanoi and northern Vietnam, but also a major regional transit hub.
Built to ICAO 4E international standards, the airport will operate under a dual-use model combining civil and defense aviation, and is envisioned as a next-generation smart airport, with synchronised and integrated systems.

In the initial development phase, targeted for completion by 2030, the airport will be capable of handling 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tonnes of cargo annually. In subsequent phases, its capacity will be increased to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tonnes of cargo per year.
At the ceremony, senior leaders from both central and local governments presented gifts to project stakeholders and 30 exemplary local households.

Addressing the event, General Luong Tam Quang emphasised that the Ministry of Public Security will work closely with relevant ministries, the Bac Ninh provincial People's Committee, and the project investor to ensure that the airport is delivered on time and safely, meeting the highest quality standards.
The goal is to put Gia Binh International Airport into initial operation by the end of 2026, in time to serve the APEC 2027 Economic Leaders’ Meeting hosted by Vietnam, he said.
He also underscored the importance of implementing resettlement and compensation policies in full compliance with regulations and with care for the well-being of affected households.

Minister Quang urged Bac Ninh authorities to expedite surrounding transport infrastructure projects, especially the high-capacity connecting road to Hanoi, which must be completed by the end of 2026, in line with the Prime Minister’s request.
He affirmed that Gia Binh International Airport is set to become a flagship model of Vietnam’s aviation infrastructure, playing a crucial role in realising the nation’s aspiration for powerful development on the global stage.
