Early-ripening lychees enter harvest season in Bac Ninh with high selling prices

Updated: 15:30, 04/05/2026

BAC NINH - Early-ripening lychees in Bac Ninh province have begun appearing on the market nearly three weeks ahead of the main harvest season, with prices rising sharply from a year earlier as limited supply and strong holiday demand boosted sales.

At Thuong Market in Bac Giang ward on May 1, early-season lychees were selling for 70,000-100,000 VND (2.6 - 3.8 USD) per kilogram, up 25,000-40,000 VND per kilogram from the same period last year.

Early-ripening lychees are sold at Thuong market in Bac Giang ward.

Traders said supplies were mainly sourced from early-ripening lychee growing areas within the province, though output remained limited. Daily sales volumes ranged from 70 kg to more than 100 kg, with most produce sold out the same day due to tight supply.

Although early-ripening lychees are considered less sweet than fruit harvested during the peak season, consumers still favor them for their mild sweetness and slightly tangy taste. Demand for the seasonal specialty rose during the April 30-May 1 holiday period, helping sustain high prices from the start of the season.

Farm-gate prices currently range from 55,000 to 70,000 VND per kilogram, with some premium-quality fruit fetching as much as 80,000 VND per kilogram, depending on appearance and quality.

Merchants are purchasing early-ripening lychees in Bac Ninh at high prices as supply remains scarce.

Farmers said they were pleased with the higher prices compared with previous years, though harvest volumes remained modest.

In key growing areas such as Phuc Hoa, Luc Son, Phuong Son and Luc Ngan, lychees have only started ripening sporadically, with overall output still limited.

As the harvest coincided with one of the country’s major holiday periods, many orchard owners began picking ripe fruit early to capitalize on stronger consumer demand and higher prices.
