After the administrative unit arrangement, the new Bac Ninh province has 99 communal-level administrative units with 33 wards and 66 communes.

Vice Chairman of the Bac Ninh People's Committee Mai Son presents a proposal seeking approval of the plan to recognize Bac Ninh Province as meeting the criteria for a first tier urban area on June 30.

The province has a total population of approximately 4 million. Of which, the total population in the wards is nearly 1.8 million, accounting for 45.09% of the total population.

The combined population of the towns and other urban areas (third tier urban areas after the transitional period) is 632,791.

The rate of urbanisation reached 60.96 percent. To date, there are 3 second tier urban areas including Bac Giang, Kinh Bac and Tu Son and 22 third tier ones.

Based on comprehensive review, analysis and assessment of current conditions of the study area for preparation of the Project and through comparison with the prescribed criteria for a first tier urban area, Bac Ninh province was concluded to meet the standards for a first tier urban area.

Regarding the criteria of urbanisation rate, the province meets 3 out of 4 criteria, particularly the urban population size from 2.5 million (the province’s population is nearly 4 million), the rate of urbanisation from 45 percent (Bac Ninh reaches 60.96 percent) and total population of the second tier urban areas reaching at least 600,000 (the province's second tier urban areas have a total population of 945,093).

After considering the submission, verification report and draft Resolution in a spirit of democracy, responsibility and high consensus, the delegates of the provincial People's Council voted to approve the Resolution on the Project recognising Bac Ninh province as a first tier urban area.
