Bustling jujube season

Updated: 22:18, 14/01/2024
BAC GIANG – For recent years, jujube trees have brought stable income to people in Phu Nhuan commune of Luc Ngan district (Bac Giang province). From the initial few sao (old measuring unit equals to 360 square meters), up to now, local farmers in the commune have expanded the jujube growing area to more than 60 hectares. Many households have escaped from poverty and gained prosperous condition thanks to this crop.

Phu Nhuan is entering the jujube harvest season. Traders from many places come to set up purchasing points. Duong Van Thang from Thich village excitedly said: "This year's jujube crop is good with higher productivity than in previous years. From October, jujubes began to ripen and many traders have called to place orders. The selling price ranges from 15-30,000 VND/kg (depending on type). With this price, jujube growers can feel secure in their production".

After many years of growing lychee and orange without much success, in 2013, Thang transferred the entire area to plant 600 jujube trees. In 2022, the jujube orchard yielded nearly 30 tonnes of fruit. Excluding the production cost, he earned a profit of about 400 million VND. This year, he expects to harvest over 30 tonnes of fruits. He sold 1 ton with the price of 30,000 VND per kg.

Along with Thang’s family, the locals in such villages of Thich, Thac Deo, Vach Gao, Thuan A, Thuan B and Cau Vong are focusing on harvesting jujubes. Truong Thi Gai in Hong Giang commune (Luc Ngan) said: "Every year, when jujube season comes, I come to buy jujubes in Phu Nhuan commune to sell in some provinces and cities. Currently, I buy two or three tonnes of fruits every day".

Duong Van Siu, Vice Chairman of Phu Nhuan Commune People's Committee, informed that jujube trees have been planted by local people since 2012. Acknowledging the effectiveness, since 2015, people have converted some areas of crops and fruit trees with poor productivity to jujube.

To date, the entire commune has more than 60 hectares of jujubes. The harvest time lasts from October of the previous year to the end of February of the following year. On average, for 1 sao of jujube, farmers earn about 20 million VND, much higher than other crops.

This year, jujube output in Phu Nhuan is estimated to reach 700-800 tonnes with revenue of nearly 15 billion VND. To improve product quality, localities focus on building and planning concentrated production areas; strengthening technical training and mobilizing households to apply organic production processes so as to make Phu Nhuan jujubes an OCOP product in the near future.
