Watching Ngoc Lan and Van Anh compete makes it easy to see their chemistry, built over more than 10 years since they were first selected for the badminton programme at Training and Competition Center No. 2. Ngoc Lan (born in 2002, from Tan Dinh commune) and Van Anh (born in 2003, from Da Mai ward) both showed natural talent and passion for badminton from an early age.

Through years of challenging and persistent training, the two have gradually proven themselves, becoming standout athletes in Bac Ninh badminton.

The year 2015 marked an important milestone in their careers when they officially teamed up to compete in the women’s doubles event at the National Youth Badminton Championships.

As they transitioned to the senior competition level, the Bac Ninh duo consistently became top seeds at national tournaments - an opponent no team wanted to encounter early on. Together, they have earned hundreds of gold, silver, and bronze medals in domestic and international competitions.

Chu Viet Bac, Deputy Director of Bac Ninh Sports Training and Competition Centre No. 1 and head coach of the badminton division, remarked: “Than Van Anh’s quick reflexes, fast-paced play, and sharp net skills combined with Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan’s strong physique and powerful backcourt smashes make them a formidable women’s doubles pair. After Nguyen Thi Sen and Vu Thi Trang, they are the next outstanding faces of women’s badminton, contributing to the prestige of Bac Ninh badminton.”

To achieve today’s success, beyond their natural athletic gifts, both Ngoc Lan and Van Anh have trained with relentless effort, strict discipline, and unwavering determination. Born into families without a sports background, their love for badminton started from local recreational courts.

One of the most unforgettable moments in their careers came at the National Sports Festival 2018. Competing for the first time at the country’s biggest multi-sport event, the duo played in the women’s team category. In the finals, after the first three matches, the score was 2-1 in favour of Thai Binh.

Facing immense pressure in the fourth match, Ngoc Lan and Van Anh fought with everything they had, equalising the score and boosting team morale. This momentum helped their teammates secure the overall victory, bringing home a precious gold for Bac Ninh badminton.

Ngoc Lan and Van Anh are now looking forward to repeating their success at the 10th National Sports Festival in 2026. Winning a gold medal at this tournament is extremely challenging, given the limited number of badminton medal events and the increasingly fierce competition among provinces.

Nevertheless, both athletes continue to train with the highest determination, aiming to bring pride to Bac Ninh sports and to honour their decade-long partnership on the court.

With strong ambition and the desire to conquer new heights, the journey of Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan and Than Van Anh surely promises many more exciting milestones for badminton fans to follow.
